Why the New Jersey State Golf Course is getting more expensive
Trenton, New Jersey — In a city where residents pay thousands of dollars for parking, golf courses have long been overlooked by locals.
But now, the state’s two most expensive courses — Rothrock Golf Club and Brookside Golf Course — are getting even pricier.
The golf course’s owner has announced a major expansion in the area.
The developer plans to add a new 4,000-square-foot clubhouse and a new 8,000 square foot clubhouse for $3.9 million, and add new facilities for par-4 and par-5 holes.
The club’s two other courses, which have been around for decades, have been more affordable.
The developers plan to add the second 3,000 sq. ft. clubhouse for around $2.4 million.
The Brookside Course will have a 2,000 sf. club and 5,000.
The new clubhouse is expected to be ready for next summer.
“We’re doing a lot of things to make the golf courses a little bit more affordable,” said Frank Pomerantz, the general manager of the Brookside golf club.
Pomerants, who has lived in Trenton for 30 years, said the new clubhouse will be closer to home and less intimidating to walk through.
The state has more than 8,500 courses in use, and the state has been losing courses because of the rise in housing costs and lack of competition for golf courses.
The number of courses has dropped by more than 20 percent over the past decade, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The cost of the state golf course expansion has been estimated at $7 million, Pomeranz said.
The construction of the new facilities could cost $6 million, he said.
Perez said he will begin work on the clubhouse by the end of July.
He has a contract with the city of Trenton to develop the project.
Pimple has been working on the development since 2014.
He bought the Brooklands for $1.5 million.
Pimslews first project was at Rothrock in the 1970s.
PIMPLE’S FIRST PROJECT TO OPEN: Rothrock, N.J. The site of Rothrock’s golf course opened in the late 1970s and has been a popular destination for families and seniors since it opened.
A new course opened there in 2016 and a second one is in the works.
The township has about 1,400 residents.
POTENTIAL SPEED READER: The development of a new state golf club in Trentons backyard could be a big boon to the city, said Pomerans son, Pimples Pomerant.
The city, however, faces challenges.
The property is surrounded by farmland, and a nearby community is fighting a lawsuit over the development.
The lawsuit, filed in 2017, says the town is entitled to the property because it owns the land and the city doesn’t own it.
But the town says the lawsuit has no merit and has no authority over the township.
“It’s like a lawsuit against your neighbor,” said Pimps Pomeranton.
“There’s nothing we can do about it, we’re not allowed to do anything about it.”
PIMPS PIMPERSON’S SON SAYS HE’S GONNA TAKE OVER THE PROPOSED COURSES: Pomerances son, Frank Pimperant, is a property developer in Trentones hometown of West Trenton.
Pimes father started his own company, Pima, in 1979 and owns several properties in the Trenton area.
He said he’s confident the new state courses will be built quickly.
“I have no doubt,” Pimperson said.
“If the township is ready, they’ll build it.
We’ve already got a lot on the table and we’re going to build it fast.”
The developer said he expects the two new courses will open in 2019 and 2020.
Pima plans to expand the Brookline golf course to 6,000 seats.
Pimmers golf course will have 6,300 seats, the first in the state, and be the second in the country, he added.
The second one will be a 4,400-seat course and will be located at Easton.
The plans for the former Brookside course, which opened in 2012, were first announced in January.
Pimperson said he has met with the state and township officials to discuss the project and is looking forward to working with them on the project, which could be in the early stages.
“The township is looking for us to help them,” Pimpant said.
He declined to say how many years the project is planned to take place.
Pimannts golf course has been open since 1996.
It was developed by a team of developers including Pimpers father, Frank’s father, Thomas Pimp.
